Well, it's the most wonderful time of the year so long as you like cheesey pop tunes released by talentless nomarks in a desperate attempt to use christmas to make a quick buck. In case that wasn't obvious enough for you, I am, of course, talking about that great british tradition of the christmas single.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the Christmas single in spite of how that intro must seem. Unfortunately though, for every good Christmas single there has to be several bad ones. This year I have to admit I'm still hunting for the good one.
I suppose Band Aid 20 is the closest to a good Christmas song this year but it's got no sleigh bells and is nowhere near as catchy as the original. I also reckon they released it a week too early to get it to Christmas number one these days but I'm sure I'll be proved wrong on Sunday when the xmas No1 is announced.
Anyway, enough moaning about them, it's time to check out the contenders for the xmas No1 slot:
I reckon that probably covers the main contenders. There are others going for it such as Ronan Keeting and the omnipotent festive Cliff but if we're honest only mums buy Ronan songs and only Christians buy Cliff records these days. Over on the other side of the spectrum there's the vaguely blasphemous 'I Have Forgiven Jesus' from Morrissey but lets face facts Band Aid 20 is still the favourite at 1/20 and it'll take some beating to get past that.
Just one last thing to leave you with. Top Scooter tribute band moped have got together with the guiness book of hit singles to create the ultimate christmas single; Santa Vs Moped - Gonna Have a No.1 This Christmas but alas it's not been released as a single so you'll have to make do with listening to the MP3.
